Spring / Water Vortex

Spring Water Vortex 1993 - 1994

The work is viewer controlled, via adjustments to the motors speed and timing of acceleration. This interaction of time, gravity and fluid dynamics set an infinitely variable platform of physical possibilities. The viewer is responsible for how these forms are made, by how quickly and strongly they accelerate the spinning of the column of water in the tank. Perceptually as humans we have set, time based judgements and preconceptions, of how objects move through the air. However when we view a column of water moving 'around' air,  it behaves differently to what we are used to seeing. This change in behavior, promotes our perception to also open up to other possible changes, creating a scenario where the minds imagination, can slip into 'non-standardized thought' a state or what we commonly call day dreaming.
